Measurement Method

Leadtek Fingertip Pulse Oximeter determines SpO2 by measuring the absorption of red & infrared light passing through perfuse tissue. Changes in absorption caused by the pulsation of blood in the vascular bed are used to determine SpO2 reading and pulse rate. Oximetry Principle

The pulse oximeter identifies the absorbency of the pulsatile fraction of blood, defined as the arterial component, from the absorbency due to nonpulsatile venous or capillary blood and other tissue pigments. Identification and isolation of the pulsatile component are difficult in the presence of low perfusion in the patient.

Oxyhemoglobin will absorb more infrared light and allows red light to pass.
Deoxyhemoglobin will absorb more red light and allows infrared light to pass.
